On this episode of The Podcasting Underground I answer the question… How much is your podcast worth? This is based on a recent post on my blog. If someone were to buy your podcast today, how would they determine its value?

The purpose of this discussion isn’t necessarily to help you sell your podcast, but rather to illustrate a number of metrics you could use to determine the value and success of your podcast in addition to the traditional “size of your audience”-type stats.

In this episode I outline 24 points that you can use to determine the ongoing value and success of your podcast. Some of these come from this Blog Herald post. Here are the 24 points I talk about:

  1. The number of listeners to each episode based on unique downloads
  2. Audience growth trends
  3. Current income sources for your podcast and site
  4. Average monthly income from the podcast and site
  5. Growth of income
  6. Direct sales figures
  7. Monthly traffic based on unique visitors and page views
  8. Traffic growth trends
  9. Recent traffic spikes from important sites
  10. Amount of traffic to your site from search engines
  11. List of which keywords are bringing in the most traffic
  12. The number of inbound links listed in Google
  13. Types of inbound links (are there some from quality long term sites)
  14. The number of subscribers to your feed
  15. Feed subscriber growth trends
  16. Google Page Rank
  17. SEOMoz.org’s PageStrength
  18. Technorati Ranking
  19. Blogging Platform used
  20. Alexa Rank
  21. Age of your site
  22. Number of posts and episodes in your archive
  23. The number of email list subscribers
  24. Past press coverage and quotes

There’s been a lot of discussion on the internet and elsewhere about the importance of disclosure in social media and word of mouth marketing. Companies have been getting in trouble and the FCC has chimed in to warn about the necessity for disclosure.

There is nothing wrong with benefiting from the hard work you put into your show, especially if it keeps you motivated to continue producing quality content.
